Rinus van Alebeek – Sahelsounds (based on the writings and recordings by Christopher Kirkley)

This is from things internet. I saw a post by DelVerme, a club in the neo-realist quarter of Rome. They have very good beer, very good wine, a very good sound system and very good after hours. They posted a video impression of a performance by Mdou Moctar. Three young men in desert outfit, wearing turbans, playing in a band. It was one of the most exciting pieces of music I’d encountered since long. I went searching the net and came across sahelsounds.

It was a website with a very intriguing blog. Christopher Kirkley posted about his experiences in the Sahel, the southern part of the Sahara desert. He writes about his travels, his encounters with musicians and puts up the recordings he made. I wrote him a mail and asked if he would be interested in making a radio show for us. He answered politely that he didn’t have the time for it. So I did it.

I made a selection from his reports, from the present day back to 2009. I downloaded almost all of his recordings, and made a selection from those too. Then I put them all together, hoping that my impression not only pays respect to the work Christopher does, but also to the musicians and persons he encountered. To the listener it might serve as an introduction to a new world of sounds.
