Experiments & Observations on Electricity

Somewhere between a visit to a Titanic
exhibition in March 2022, and the answer to a question on the Chase, Experiments & Observations on Electricity was born, and what a name!

Possibly a subconscious nod to Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, one of my favourite bands and an influence on this my first ever album release.

Like many people, Covid has impacted my life in so many ways, good and sadly bad. One positive though, being a burst of creativity that included making music. For 40 odd years I’ve dreamt of producing a song, listening to the music of early period OMD, Tangerine Dream’s Phaedra and Jean- Michel Jarre, his Equinoxe album a particular favourite, and the soundscapes and moods these artists created.

In March of 2022 I went to the Titanic exhibition in London, with my wife and stepdaughter. Whilst walking around this most moving of exhibitions, the headphone commentary playing in my ears, a title “An Overwhelming Sense of Sadness” came to me. It sounds pretentious, but bells and the sound of waves came to mind, and so I told my wife and stepdaughter this on leaving. The weekend that followed saw my wife go away, so home alone I retreated to my home studio, and gradually put sounds to the title that I had in my head. I realised after a few weeks I was capable, with some hard work, of producing music. What was surprising was, the music sounded listenable, coherent, and the people I played it too liked it.

The project name came when watching the Chase, and the answer to a question about Benjamin Franklin, and it all fell into place. The rest as they say is history.

So here it is, the debut album by Experiments & Observations on Electricity. What does it sound like? Well, I would say ambient and electronic soundscapes, or just file under electronica as I’m lazy about genres. Whatever genre you decide, I hope you enjoy listening to this album as much as I have enjoyed creating it, from the music to the artwork it has been a fabulous learning curve, and journey, and I now just want to get on with album number 2.

Experiments & Observations on Electricity will be released by Cult Image Music on the 28th via Bandcamp.
