There are parts in the -THE- book about Berlin – Berlin Alexanderplatz by Alfred Döblin – a saga drenched in melodrama with lots of descriptions of the city itself, that seem to be the result of automatic writing. In a time of spiritist meetings and fairytale esoterics, this assumption doesn’t seem to be too far off.

I have the impression that the nowadays Alfred would walk around with a recorder and not with a notebook.

In the third part of the scratched vinyl show Adrian Shephard talks about a long U- and S-Bahn ride that took him to the western part of town. The show is totally improvised, so, when Adrian starts to talk about the start of the day and the encounters at Görlitzer Bahnhof, with its little dealers and an alcoholised woman on the train who is drinking wodka from a milk carton, he gets more and more into his memories, and instead of automatic writing, we hear a flow of stories, that memorize his encounters that get stranger and stranger.

A modern day-odyssey, that you should listen to on one of your rides on the U-, S-, or whatever Bahn there is in your town.
