The new show by Don Campau deals again with the German Cassette Culture. As you can hear in the show, the amount of tapes sent to Don from Germany (East and West!) was enormous. This all happened last century, during the heydays of the international cassette exchange movement that got to be known as Cassette Culture. We are now witnessing a revival, or maybe better a rebirth of the cassette, be it with different characteristics, and not based on a worldwide postal network, that made packets actually cross borders and oceans to arrive on someone’s doormat.
The second part of the special on German Cassette Culture spans the years 1986 to 1997. It is music, sure. It is also a documentary, yes. But, maybe even more so, the individual tracks reflect certain lifestyles that now are history.

The No Pigeonholes radio show is a result of Don’s direct involvement with the cassette culture, the vast network of home-produced cassette exchangers that anticipated the internet, its social networks and the whole shabam of netlabels and free downloadable musicians. An attempt to archive the movement is in his Living Archive of Underground Music.
